Women’s Football is back, and it’s a real Riot!
Regina Riot Prepares for 2022 WWCFL Season
April 18, 2022
Training camp opens this week for the Regina Riot, the three-time Western Women’s Canadian Football League (WWCFL) champions. The league returns to full operation in 2022, after an extended hiatus due to COVID-19. The Riot played a three-game mini season in 2021 against the Saskatoon Valkyries.
“We’re glad we were able to get those three games in last year,” says Riot head coach Kris Hadesbeck. “The experience was very valuable, especially in light of how many new players we welcomed to our team. We’ll be young again this year, but I know we’ll be competitive.”
Training camp opens Thursday, April 21 with practice from 6-8 p.m. The team is back on the field the following evening from 6-8, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The annual Red and White team scrimmage is Sunday at 1:30 p.m. All practices are at the University of Regina Rams field on the university campus.
The Riot’s home opener is Saturday, April 30 at Leibel Field against the Winnipeg Wolfpack, with a 1:30 p.m. kickoff. The Riot travel to Winnipeg to take on the Manitoba Fearless May 15, before battling the defending champion Valkyries in a home and home set. The first game goes May 28 in Saskatoon, with the Riot hosting the rematch on Saturday, June 4 (7 p.m., Mosaic Stadium).
“There’s a lot of excitement around women’s football this year, especially with Regina hosting the U18 national championship this summer,” Hadesbeck says. “Hopefully that translates into strong support for our team this season. I guarantee fans will be entertained.”
